It’s Friday and Fridays are only good for web-slinging! In case you don’t follow the Canhead vocab to tough, “web-slinging” is what I call surfing the net. I never surfed before, and Spider-Man is..well, the Man! So in Canhead land, we call it web-slinging. Got it? I get these from “Can These be the Words of God?”. I am not Islamic. I am baptized as a Christian and believe some of the Christian doctrines. I got love of Islam too, so you can see how it can get confusing sometimes. A lot of good and bad points are in both religions but the leaders of the countries that each religion represents uses said religions as weapons and tools of propaganda. Because of that, I exercise my civil rights and boycott going to church on Sunday. Well, not really, but it sounds better than I’m too lazy to get up that early on a Sunday.

The Devil In Miss Jones

Hot97 is knee deep in another scandal. The station is fast on it was to being so last month, with their consistently bad morning show programming and poor judgment. Recently, the station aired a parody song entitled “The Tsunami Song” during their morning show, hosted by Miss Jones, which mocked the tsunami victims. Many were outraged at the station’s insensitivity but it didn’t stop there.

“On this tape you hear them introducing the "Tsunami Song," then Miss Jones and co-host Todd Lynn launching into an abusive tirade against Miss Info when she voices her objection to it. Miss Jones finally tells Info she's only complaining because "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian."

Then, after Miss Info has said the song is offensive to Asians, co-host Todd Lynn informs her: "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Yes, he really says that. It's at 3:37 on the mp3. “

Sine then, several things have happened. Miss Jones has been suspended from Hot97, Jin made a Hot 97 dis record, and a petition is circling around the internet. As I am in the Cap City of Albany, I didn’t hear this firsthand, but the story and mp3s are everywhere! I suggest you go to the source and read all the info yourself. Hot 97 issued a press release in regards to the “Tsunami Song”. Wanna read it, here it goes! (Forgive me, I’ve been watching “In Living Color”, look for my review soon!)

NEW YORK, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ --

Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as for comments made at the time the song was aired. Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air: "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting(to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation. Emmis Radio and Hot 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for communityinvolvement and support. Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."

Personally, I think the song is foul, but I am a black man who listens to Howard Stern (who all other morning jocks try to imitate) so I may not be a good person to ask an opinion. Nothing really bothers me, and I don’t have time for the rest of the world’s hang-ups, I’m too busy with my own thanks. I will say this much. Getting mad at Hot97 for this song is like getting mad at the clouds when it rains. This is an offensive song true, but have you listen to most of Hot97’s play list? If this is the first time you’ve been offended listening to Hot97, then you must be loosing your hearing or something. As a hip-hop head, I am offended by what songs they consider to be hip-hop, but that's another issue.

They have kept it really real on the annoying b.s. broadcasting tip for a long while now. Don’t get me started with hip-hop lyrics these days, emcees with an 8 bar multi-syllable verse that doesn’t really say anything, the ongoing Tupac-B.I.G. cloning, or the hypocrisy in the industry. If you’re going to be mad at Hot97 for anything, be mad at them for continuing to water down the culture by promoting thoughts and perceptions that are not “gangsta” or “hip-hop” in anyway, shape, or form. These fools don’t even really contribute to hip-hop music, and that’s bad because they are DJS! (boring talk over, pause-play djs, not Q-Bert, Jam Master Jay, Mix Master Mike, Grandmaster Flash, real type type dj’s)


Who else remembers the time when Star and Bucwild (also in the news this month for racially offensive material) played that clip after Aaliyah died? They couldn’t even finish the show before EVERYONE in hip-hop started calling them telling them to fall back. Jay-Z wasn’t happy about it. Neither was Ms. Jones. She got into a argument with Star and Buck and I think she left the show that day. Fast forward a few years, Jonzee is running things, and what does she do? She blast Ms. Info on air, starts talking a little too much, and draws the entire world's attention on herself and her Hot97 crew in downtown Manhattan.

It’s snowing like mad, and I am holding it down here at work. In case I didn’t tell you what it is I do to pay the bills, well put it like this.

Due Process Is A Bullet Part 2

“The Searchers” had blatantly racist scenes and dialogue. Wayne’s character seems to be blood thirsty, driven to find his captured niece from a band of rogue Comanche.

He views the Indians as ruthless and will kill them without a second thought. Although he is the most vocal of the group, his co-stars all seem to understand his view and attitudes, even if they don’t share all of them. He is driven to find his captured niece Debbie, who was kidnapped by marauding Comanches. Only thing is, he plans on killing Debbie once he finds her. She has been used by the “Comanche buck” as he says, so she doesn’t deserve to live. He also has a mysterious past, he is a ex- Confederate soldiers who never reveals how he rescued Martin Pawley or how he knows so much about Comanche and speaks their language.

The amazing thing about this particular Wayne vehicle is how much it alone influenced cinema and pop culture. In his review of the movie, Roger Ebert explains the reach of “The Seachers” influence. He says “Ethan's quest inspired a plot line in George Lucas' ''Star Wars.'' It's at the center of Martin Scorsese's ''Taxi Driver,'' written by Paul Schrader, who used it again in his own ''Hard Core.'' The hero in each of the Schrader screenplays is a loner driven to violence and madness by his mission to rescue a young white woman who has become the sexual prey of those seen as subhuman. Harry Dean Stanton's search for Nastassja Kinski in Wim Wenders' ''Paris, Texas'' is a reworking of the Ford story. Even Ethan's famous line ''That'll be the day'' inspired a song by Buddy Holly.” (Ebert, Roger Chicago Sun Times 11/2001)

During the early 1940’s, he was seen as hostile to Asians. America was at war with Japan, and the sentiment in America on a whole was the same as Wayne’s. He is seen as racist and still remains the hero of his movies.

One of these movies is “Sands Of Iwo Jima” The racist attitudes of the country during this time were clearly reflected in “Iwo Jima”. The tension between America and Japan resulted in movies that depicted America’s animosity toward our wartime enemy. The movie almost comes off as a war time pep rally on film, with the American’s fighting incredible odds and surviving.
It is interesting that Wayne plays basically the same character in this movie as in some of his earlier films. In “The Searchers” he plays sort of mystery man, with a definite military past. He continues to play the solider in “Iwo Jima” and several other movies.
John Wayne triva bit: ... The final scene of "The Searchers" was ad-libbed by Wayne as homage to good friend and fellow actor Harry Carey who had recently died. As Wayne stands in the doorway he grabs his right arms and stands there for a minute. This was Carey's signature stance. Thus the above picture.

Due process is a bullet! Part 1

I decided to view several movies staring John Wayne. I thought he would be a good actor to examine, as he stared in hundreds of movies. I didn’t realize how much his career influenced American culture. John Wayne is the perfect example of a star echoing the mood and viewpoint of our country as a whole. Following his career, you can get a very good idea of how the average middle age White male though about himself, his country and the world.

John Wayne’s movies and characters showcase contemporary American thoughts and attitudes during the time that they were made. Sometimes these attitudes were very racist. Although we were required to view three movies, I found myself viewing much more than that. My research turned up several movies that I wanted to screen for this paper, as they were noted as fine examples of the transition of racial and political attitudes in America from the 1930s clear up to the 1960s.

When examining the ideological concerns and values of the wider culture of the time period that the John Wayne represents, we see a man who seems to be molded to symbolize the image of the American male. Early on in his career, Wayne is the tough cowboy that stands firm on his beliefs or the military leader who is willing to kill and die for his country and its virtue.

His example of how to be an American helped John Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as he learned how to speak English by watching Wayne's movies. (Willis, Gary “John Wayne's America”) Waynes is the image first thought of when you mention the word “cowboy” as he practically perfected the role. His portrayal of the American cowboy and his tough nature is one that foreign leaders have said that our leaders copy.

Wayne played the role of the no nonsense, tough as nails Tom Doniphon in “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. This was a interesting movie as it featured him and another big star at the time, James Stewart. Stewart plays U.S. senator Ransom Stoddard, the lawyer who moves into a lawless town. The two form a friendship and help steer their lawless town to order by facing the town bad guy Liberty Valance.

To further complicate matters, Wayne has made plans to marry the town sweetie Hallie, played by Vera Mills. He just hasn’t told her yet. When Stewart arrives, Hallie soon falls for him, much to the displeasure of Wayne, who almost kills himself by setting his house on fire in a drunken rage. Wayne’s character is a bit grumpy to his black servant Pompey, but it is clear that Wayne depends on him, up to his death. This movie isn’t nearly as racist as some of the other movies John Wayne would go on to play.

I hope your days are filled with love and your nights are warms and quiet. Ahhhhhh……..that was nice.(no homo)

Don’t ask me why I just said that or where it came from. I’m in a pretty pissy sh!ttY mad azz phuck at u kind of mood so it’s surprising I could actually type that line without pukin’ up my Heineken. (Can blog writers get paid for product placement? Let’s see……< bs jscode :”begin subliminal experiment # 639ez$$$//>)

Anyway, I’m sitting here, mad at the world, typing on my MS WORD on WINDOWS XP($$$) trying to come up with something witty to post on this dang blog. It’s a pain because I have to much b.s. to deal with to mindlessly surf the net for funny photo-shopped pictures of Russell Simmons and Martin Luther King at Freak Nick. I have been avoiding getting too real with ya’ll on this blog. I could pull an Usher and start with the Confessions($), but the hell with all that. I didn’t even really do anything this time (I swear!) and it still got all f’ed up. Plus I’m not that big on my business being in the street. But this isn’t the street, it’s the freaking information super highway! And all this not talking about the elephant thats taking a fat steamer on the imported rug in the living roon is getting on my nerves.

So as I’m trying to do the freelance writer thing and come up with yet another snappy little hip-hop article to post as a work example, it hits me. Why don’t I do a “Sex in the City” style article, just this once? I have tons of material, and questions. And it could be a good way to meet some of the other blog writers I’ve been spying on. Why not? I could vent anyway and my sh!t is much more interesting than the latest hip-hop gossip anyway (I swear I’m going back to house music!)

So how about this. I want to hear from all of you who have drama. Look at it like an experiment or a casting call. If you have some real relationship drama that you would feel like confessing, past or present, I would love to hear it. But I want to hear the real deal break up dirt, not the MARIE CLAIRE($$$) version. I want the real reason behind the break-ups and the fights. The honest dirt though. Don’t be afraid to admit your faults. I really want to hear from those of you with kids and have to go through the baby momma and daddy drama (That’s right ladies, I wanna hear from you too!) I want to hear how you worked it out, if you did that is. If not, I really want to hear that.

I hope all of you who I send emails to will get back to me on this one. You don’t have to say much, just tell us a little bit about yourself and your situation. Then if enough people get into it, we can build on the topics and get some serious convo going. I really could use your help with this one people.

My ex always says that one line, you know the one…”If you ask anybody, they will tell you….I’m right!” So now I really want to ask anybody, and that means you. Give me a shout, tell me your baby mamma drama (or for the ladies, “that’s just my baby daddy’s trifilin azz!”)

Hip Hop Rules!

There is a lot of noise going back and forth about hip-hop being dead. I tell you what’s dead, people talking that hip-hop is dead sh!t. That’s muerto! I hear you, hip-hop like it used to be is dead. So do something about it. If you don’t like what you hear, go make something that you do like to hear. Then put it out so the rest of us can hear it too. There won’t be a movement in hip-hop until people actually move. It’s like everyone is afraid to be independent these days or something.

With all the technological advances that have been made that enable us to become self contained businesses from our bedrooms, why not do the damn thing for real? Make noise! (Didn’t Greg used to be in a group back in the day?) And the thing is, I know most of the people who comment on this issue, at the very least have some turntables and a sampler of some kind sitting around. Make a beat already! If you don’t I will! (But until I do, you can always show love by checking out my last CD release on Ebay, see below. ) Put your MP3 online, promote yourself, do shows in shi!tty little bars, attend conferences, do anything just put more hip-hop music out there!

That’s all I got to say about the matter. I know hip-hop sucks these days, but it’s still hip-hop. Don’t give up on it. And there really is some great stuff happening out there. Even the bad stuff is better than listening to bad pop music.

Marley Marl's House of Hits- I was looking for “Marley Marl In Control Vol 1” but this will do. Nothing but the hits by Marley Marl, the old school king of the beats.

Who's dropping dimes?

Let me find out some of my people are dropping dimes. Nah, none of my folks would ever do anything as foul as that! No, I'm not talking about that kind of dime dropping. Spending money on Inauguration Day is the kind of dime dropping I'm talking about.

In addition to the "Turn You Back On Bush" protest that is scheduled to jump off on the 20th, now all American patriots can join in the peaceful protest movements by refusing to spend ANY money on Jan. 20th.

There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.

Over at HipHop-Blogs, Hashim has a post about the article Greg Tate wrote in the the latest Village Voice. Greg is a veteran in the game, and has contributed some insightful articles in the past. In his latest piece, "Hip Hop Turns 30", Greg goes on to discuss the current state of affairs in hip-hop. Hashim disagrees with him on a few points. Personally, I'm to much of a Gemini to totally take any side of the issue. There are good points on both sides, but I don't really expect to hear political messages in music. Sometimes I want to hear Lil Jon, some times I want to hear Common. But I hate when rappers try to do both, talk about their bitches and G-packs while starting the revolution. It's confusing. American politician, the first black American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress.

Shirley St. Hill was the daughter of immigrants; her father was from British Guiana (now Guyana) and her mother from Barbados. She grew up in Barbados and in her native Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Brooklyn College (B.A., 1946).

While teaching nursery school and serving as director of the Friends Day Nursery in Brooklyn, she studied elementary education at Columbia University (M.A., 1952) and married Conrad Q. Chisholm in 1949 (divorced 1977).

An education consultant for New York City's day-care division, she was also active with community and political groups, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and her district's Unity Democratic Club.

In 1964–68 she represented her Brooklyn district in the New York state legislature.In 1968 Chisholm was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, defeating the civil rights leader James Farmer. In Congress she quickly became known as a strong liberal who opposed weapons development and the war in Vietnam and favored full-employment proposals.

As a candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president in 1972, she won 152 delegates before withdrawing from the race.Chisholm, a founder of the National Women's Political Caucus, supported the Equal Rights Amendment and legalized abortions throughout her congressional career, which lasted from 1969 to 1983.

She wrote the autobiographical works Unbought and Unbossed (1970) and The Good Fight (1973).After her retirement from Congress, Chisholm remained active on the lecture circuit. She held the position of Purington Professor at Mount Holyoke College (1983–87) and was a visiting scholar at Spelman College (1985).

Seattle over Atlanta Seattle 28:Atlanta 26 Damn, yet another close game. Warrick Dunn must be mad as hell, missing that 2 point conversion. So close. Seattle looks good, but they ain't all that. Dallas did it to them for crying out loud...and speaking of Dallas.

NY got the win over America's Team, Eli proves that he ain't no "trick baby" and dumb NY Giants fans can feel a little better about their over hyped team! "Die Hard NY Giants fans=New Yorkers who know nothing about football!" (that's a quote from a friend, I won't say who becasue NY Giant fans can be violent too!)

What a week! I don't think anyone covered the point spreads so it was a wrap this week. But exciting nontheless. Who's going to the Super Bowl for the tailgate party? (About all I can afford!)

I could have posted the latest hip-hop news (Who shot at who, sued who, called who a you know what, or said something about someone's mama on record) but it all seems so pointless and stupid compared to the news of the tsunamis and it's victims. I didn't think there could be a disaster worse than 9/11, but this is a much bigger tragedy. The news reports seem to get worse every day. Here are some links on the story. Q: What happened in Lagos?

A: We got back to Lagos and I thought that they were going to change. But I was backstage and they allowed 50 Cent's boys to embarrass us. Because we resisted, 50 Cent had to come on stage straight from his car. After that I went on stage and I told the fans. "You are beautiful people and Nigeria is a beautiful country. If you don't love 50 Cent, if you don't love Eedris Abdulkareem, you wouldn't be here.

But how come 50 Cent came on stage and dropped N200 notes on you, saying "I heard you people are poor." I asked if that is how poor they really are and they said no.

~Bob Ejike makes a good point as well. He states “If the reverse situation were the case, would Americans have frustrated their national star into creating a violent scene in an aircraft before getting his due?” Good question.

I'm locked up! (They won't let me out!)

I know, I know, I know...the holiday season sucks. Not everyone is partial
to to all the merriment and festivities. The last minute shopping.
The over-spending. The long holiday dinners with the in-laws. And God forbid
your not a Christian or are one of the more advanced Christians who are aware
that Jesus wasn't born on December 25th (Hi Ma!) But this year, I refuse to
let reality rain on my holiday season. Yeah, Christmas is all commercial
now anyway, but you know what? With all the madness I have been through
this year (ask my friends, they'll tell you) and all the madness we all have been
through this year, I say let the real world wait. Let's celebrate! If you don't have
any loot for gifts, are mad at everyone in your family and don’t want to see them
at X-Mas dinner, or are just a scrooge in general, be grateful for what you've got.
Some of us have it much worse this holiday season. Peace to all our soldiers and
innocents fighting and dying overseas! God bless you all! And peace to the woman
you love to hate! Keep your head up M.


Dear Friends,

When one is incarcerated with 1,200 other inmates, it is hard to be selfish
at Christmas hard to think of Christmases past and Christmases future --
that I know will be as they always were for me -- beautiful!
So many of the women here in Alderson will never have the joy and well
being that you and I experience. Many of them have been here for years
-- devoid of care, devoid of love, devoid of family.

I beseech you all to think about these women -- to encourage the American
people to ask for reforms, both in sentencing guidelines, in length of
incarceration for nonviolent first-time offenders, and for those involved in
drug-taking. They would be much better served in a true rehabilitation
center than in prison where there is no real help, no real programs to
rehabilitate, no programs to educate, no way to be prepared for life "out there"
where each person will ultimately find herself, many with no skills and no
preparation for living.

I am fine, really. I look forward to being home, to getting back to my valuable
work, to creating, cooking, and making television. I have had time to think,
time to write, time to exercise, time to not eat the bad food, and time to walk
and contemplate the future. I've had my work here too. Cleaning has been my
job, washing, scrubbing, sweeping, vacuuming, raking leaves, and much more.
But like everyone else here, I would rather be doing all of this in my own home,
and not here -- away from family and friends.

I want to thank you again, and again, for your support and encouragement.
You have been so terrific to me and to everyone who stood by me.
I appreciate everything you have done, your emails, your letters, and your
kind, kind words. Happy holidays,

Next season, you guys should wear the Syracuse style jerseys. I think you blinded the Pats defensive line!

The Dis-Education of Kanye West

I must be living in a cave or something. I had no idea there was such an anti-Kanye West movement going on. We get a guy making (or buying) a song about Jesus and gang of fools start hating on him. But if he did “buy” the song “Jesus Walks, so what?

I once did some production work for a once popular, now fallen off music producer, with the assumption that he was going to put me on. Months later, I hear my drum tracks and rare jazz samples on a very popular female emcee’s song. The producer in question refused to return any of my calls. He would have gotten knocked the f’ out the night I bumped into him at a major recording studio in Manhattan, if his pistol packing bodyguards would have had the night off. Now that is f’ed up.

Kanye’s deal doesn’t seem to be that bad to me. I agree, he can come off a bit annoying, but I can’t totally throw him under the bus. Not yet. But you can! Here are some links on the subject. Go to Byron Crawford.com for more info.
