Really Really Good # 6
Welcome back! Coming down the pipe-line super slow, thick, and rich, like digital molasses for the internet masses, it's another sloppy sweet treat to help move your tired azzez! Way too funkee for the average church junkee, they put me in the mix with Really Really Good #6! Rock out with your Ecko Flavor Flav Yellow Alarm Clock out, yoaming?!?! In this episode, we find our hero, the defiant 1.LQ6.3.9., shackled to the laptop like Sidney P. running to freedom's horizon. With all this news, we'll both be long gone before the hounds come around!

DVD's in the headrest, straight west coastin'
Hip Hop By Da Bay
MVD/Cult DVD
When I first got this DVD, I was amped to check it out. I am new to the West Coast, but consider myself a professor of hip-hop (sort of like Griff and X but without the degrees...for now anyway) So I expected this DVD to be on point. What a better way for me to get to know about Hip Hop from the Bay, than to check out this DVD that had some of the Bay's greats on the cover.
The DVD comes with a booklet on Hip-Hop Music in Da Bay that breaks down the legends (Too Short, E-40 and The Click, C-Bo, Paris and more) and where they come from. The booklet, written by JR of Worldwindnews.com, is tight! Filled with photos and must read chapters like The Birth of Frisco and The Birth of Vallejo, it's a nice opener to the DVD. Then I watched it. I mean, I'm not mad at it, but I'm not thrilled with what I got.
The DVD features mainly up and coming emcees performing in small venues. While some of the songs are pretty cool, the DVD is a major letdown, as I expected some clips from the major name emcees from the Bay area. Jahi, Attik, Krushadelic, Zion I, ISe Lyfe and Pro are all good emcees that deserved to be heard, but the DVD should have put more emphasis on the fact that they are the rappers on the here, and not E-40, Too Short or any of the major Bay artists.
If you are a fan of one of the artists that are featured, then this DVD is perfect for you. For me personally, after having my expectations dashed, it just seemed like a long movie I didn't want to watch. Still not mad at the emcees on, but mad at the emcees that were not on.

A Night Of Ferocious Joy
Music Video Distributors
This DVD is history in the making and most people don't even know it. Filmed on Mother's Day, 2002 during the ARTSPEAKS! NOT IN OUR NAME concert, it is a time capsuled document in itself. Rewind to 2002 and you may remember the tension that was, and still is, in the air. The War on Terror had just begun and many people began to voice their feelings on the war, and President Bush.
One of the first concerts ever staged in protest to the war on terror was the ARTSPEAKS!NOT IN OUR NAME concert, held at The Palace Theater in Hollywood. The line up included Blackalicious, Saul Williams, The Coup, Dialated Peoples, Ozomatli, and many more. This DVD is a great chance to see a ground breaking show, dedicated to raising awarness of one of the most critical issues of our time period. The fact that this was the first concert of it's kind shows just how powerful and innovative the hip-hop nation can be.
I highly recommend this DVD for the performances, and the message behind it as well. Cop that when it hits stores September 13!

Celly Cel presents Rap Life Behind The Scenes
Realside Records
Celly Cel drops an impressive DVD compilation with this one. Filled with appearances by heavyweights, behind the scenes looks at his radio interviews, signings, and performances. While some of the live show clips have terrible lighting, the other scenes more than make up for it. Watching Celly Cel, E-40 and the Click rip it live at the radio station makes you feel like your in the dj booth or on the highway swerving to the freestyle.
With appearances by Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx, E-40, Mack 10, Outlawz, Yukmouth, Baby Bash, Cbo, Richie Rich, B-Legit, MC Hammer , NBA and NFL celebrities and more, this is a tight DVD. Cop that!

Room Full Of Mirrors-A Biography of Jimi Hendrix
Charles Cross-Hyperion Books
Probably more amazing than the way Jimi Hendrix played his guitar, is how he came to play guitar in the first place. It's not that his picking the instrument up was some sort of King Arthur/Excalibur type miracle. It's the fact that he was able to become a international rock star against all his adversity. His life was plaggued by a rough childhood, with the constant threat of foster homes looming overhead, hunger, and suffering from one of the worst case of starving artist syndrome ever recorded. As Hendrix rose to stardom, he knew that it was his for the taking. His story is truly amazing, and Charles Cross has done an excellent job in documenting some of these events.
Room Full Of Mirrors takes us back to the early days of Jimi's parents and grandparents to set the stage. His life in Washington could be a drama in itself. As he grows and begins to move around the country, we watch his style evolve and his guitar playing skill mature. Some of the more memorable pages of the book are chapters which describe his army days in Fort Campbell, KY/Clarksville, Tn., his Harlem, NY stint, and his touring with several well know bands of the day including Little Richard, The Isley Brothers, and James Brown. This seemed to be a re-occurring theme for Jimi, as he was fired from almost every well known band for either being late, or playing to wildly at the shows. If these bands only knew the untapped treasure they had in Hendrix, they would have fired every one else and kept Jimi.
While reading this book, it occurred to me, that part of the problem for Jimi was obviously race related, as neither blacks or whites seemed ready for this lanky, permed haired, rock and roll guitar god who preferred featured boas, odd suits and was an equal opportunity womanizer. This was during the turbulent early 60's, the civil rights movement was still in it's infancy, and race relations were not what they are today. The thought of Jimi pushing the limits with his wild playing style probably upset everyone. Soon, they would all have to pay Jimi respect as his time was about to come.
I am still reading this one but have rounded the bend and I'm almost done. There are tons of songs listed that Jimi played on that I am trying to compile, complete with audio links. Give me a minute on that one. Pick this one up for the music lover in your house until then.
