Make My Funk The P Funk!

Last night the Mothership Connection landed in full force in Downtown Los Angeles. For those looking to get off their asses and jam, they didn't have to look far to find the funk! Crash Mansion was the landing pad, hosting not one but two funk filled events at the same time. The funk was about to hit the California fan once again, as George Clinton came to town!

Thursday night was one of the nights when the social planets all seemed to align, giving star gazers more options than they could handle. The evening was set off by DJ Hapa, Mr. Choc, Candice and the crew at Cheers, holding their weekly happy hour party. Their early after work special is a force to be dealt with, as they projected the NBA Finals on the big screen. The drink specials had most of the home team folks tipsy way before The Lakers went into half time. The best part of this deal is that early birds were able to sneak into the club and see both Game 1 and George Clinton, Parliment/Funkadelic for FREE! I think that was the best deal in town that night, as tons of Laker fans were in the spot early, cheering and booing the game!

As I stood in the back hammering down Buds, Kobe and the boys choked in the fourth quarter as The Laker loss took the vibe down a bit in the room. DJ Hapa and Mr. Choc lit the turntables up and got the party rockin' again, as the main room began to fill. This would be the room that would loose it's roof, soon as P-Funk hit the stage.

Uncle Jam still knows how to put the show together. While he isn't as energetic as he used to be, the jams still thump! He was joined onstage with several members of his Parliment/Funkadelic squad. Classics like "Flashlight", "Get Off Your Ass And Jam", "We Want The Funk", and "Tear The Roof Off The Sucker" were played to the crowds sheer delight, as were new cuts like the Kendra Foster lead "Bounce To This".

Kendra crooned the sultry vocals while the band backed her with a lite bumpy track. Soon as she stepped back from the microphone, the Funk Mob tore loose and gave us a sonic explosion, forcing us to jump instead of bounce! That was just one of the night's shining moments.

Clinton has been called "the referee", as he leads his crew of musical misfits to the jam session promised land! His call and response to the the funk players behind him gave the crowd flashbacks of James Brown. George could often be seen standing and smiling, vibing the the music while the band played on. The theatrical presentations of Sir Nose, Starchild, and Poo Poo Man brought his entire Funk galaxy to life, while George continued to lead the band by his sheer presence.

To make sure that Los Angeles heads would have something to talk about, Clinton brought AChozen to the stage as well! The new super group features RZA of The Wu-Tang Clan as well as Shavo of System Of A Down. They kicked off a freestyle session of "Shame On A Nigga" that had the crowd going nuts. I had to laugh out loud when Clinton announced RZA as Bobby Digital. A girl standing next to me screams to her boyfriend, "Oh my God, whats a Bobby Digital?!?" As her boyfriend corrected her, I took a few shots of the stage, grabbed a souvenir, and exited stage right.
George Clinton is still on tour, check his website for dates and cities. Make sure you catch P-Funk when they come to your town! Oh yeah, click here to view my pictures from the show, and make my funk the P-Funk!

It's the new style!

As we get ready for a hot summer here at the compound, I figured I'd try to spruce up the blog here a bit. Shake it up a bit, ya know? I'm not sure how long I'll let this look stay up, but I think it's pretty tight, with the old school mac flavor for you old school macs that was doing that online dating thing way before MySpace and Facebook was even thought of. (Who remembers Yahoo Personal Pages when they were really wild?) Shout to you if you were downloading your exclusive mp3 breaks on a set up that looked like this, way back in the day. You know, before Napster got turned out! Back to the future with Kayaro!

and now..back the the show...

Listen to LA artist JhaVoice's "Voice 2 Sing" CD online for free!

JhaVoice is winning over fans daily with her CD, "Voice 2 Sing". 13 perfect examples of true soul music from this international singer! If you haven’t listened to the sultry sounds of JhaVoice, you might be missing out on one of your favorite albums without even knowing it. Hailed by some as the new Sade, JhaVoice has been making a name for herself and her music, by performing at shows in Southern California and winning new fans.

With her recent performances at Hard Rock Casino (Las Vegas) The Temple Bar(Santa Monica), Grand Star(Chinatown), The Celebrity Centre(LA), Key Club (LA), Chocolat (Melrose) Zen Sushi (LA) Fresh Fest (LA) and The Blue Guitar(Palm Springs), JhaVoice continues to make music throughout California. Take a second to hear what the fuss is all about! Look for JhaVoice’s full length debut “Voice 2 Sing” on iTunes, CDBaby and Amazon.com!

An Israeli native from North African decent, JhaVoice traveled the world as a photographer before she began her music career. Her world experience and view helps define her work, as she brings an exotic harmony to the songs she works on. An accomplished guitar player and songwriter in her own right, JhaVoice enlist the production of help of up and coming heavyweight producers Kaiu Lateef, Phazze, Church Holiday, DJ Shiro, K-Beats and many other talented musicians and producers.

The “Voice 2 Sing” CD captures the true character of JhaVoice, as she sings about everything from love, pain, war, hope, faith and God. No cookie cutter non-sense here, JhaVoice has a message to deliver and she wastes no time doing it.

When JhaVoice sings in her native language, she is able to flex her style in a way no other artist can! “Col Hamishalot”, which means all of our wishes, is sung completely in Hebrew. It is an amazing example of how she weaves world music sounds into a smooth urban R&B groove. She sings “Why Do We Kill?” in English and Hebrew, setting the mood for the album. “You Say (Moonlight)” and “Keep The Faith”, both produced by K-Beats, is fast becoming the songs of choice, as the live performances had crowds cheering in approval. People describe her live performances of these songs as “goose-bump inducers”. We certainly couldn’t ask for better praise, hopefully you will be moved by this CD as well.

JhaVoice has been busy promoting the CD, with her recent shows all receiving tremendous praise! She headlined the "Circle Of Light:Independent Women In Music Showcase" at the Celebrity Center in Los Angeles and continues to improve her stage show with her incredible live band!

The single “Got Your Back” is a mid tempo groove that we feel could be a classic song of hers. It glows with a warm buzz, allowing JhaVoice to fill the track with her vibes.

You can order your copy of "Voice 2 Sing" online at iTunes, as well as AOLMusic Now, CD Baby, Yahoo Rhapsody. You can hear free songs at her MySpace page too.

Friday Hollywood Night Lights aka Meet me at the bar!

Howdy do, my good folks out there in internet land! It's Friday, and most people just got that paycheck. You know what that means, meet you at the bar! We have a few places lined up to check out, and I am trying not to get to faded tonight!

I don't know if it's just me becoming a light weight, or if they make the drinks at The Carbon extra strong, but the last time I went out drinking, I ended up back home, watching the ceiling defy gravity and spin uncontrollably. I only had 4 drinks. Gotta luv that Patron!

So tonight I will behave, and take it easy on the bottle. It will be tempting, as I plan on club hopping it up, to break 2008 in for real.
I will start the party a home, with a live broadcast of The Cyber Mix Tape Show to set the tone, check us out, and call in and let me know where you gonna be at. Soon as the show is over, I hit the street! See you at the bar!

"Ch..ch...ch..ch...changes!"

Peace party people! Hope you all had a great New Years! It has been the ride of a lifetime for us here at Kayaro! Thanks to all of you for showing love to our little blog site. This post will be short and sweet, but check for us in a few days for a run down on all things planned for Oh-8.
-
Changes
The official buzz word of 2008. It really is amazing how many times that word has been said in the last 4 days alone. All that repetitive chanting has to have some kind of impact on the collective chakras and what-not. Hopefully the change will also be good. We here at Kayaro are going through our own bout of changes, but are determined to ride thru it like the champions we are! Get ready party people, the game is about to get very interesting. Stay tuned!!!

The Cyber Mix Tape Show- Watch Wednesday 11/28/07 Recap

If you missed last nights Watch Wednesday edition of the Cyber Mix Tape Show, then take a listen to the archive below! We had a chance to talk to music producer K-Beats, jazz musician Amin from the Amin El Collective, and some of our closest friends. Somewhere in the middle of the show, I lost my VoIP connection and had to call back on a thin sounding land line. The show went on, as my guest held the fort down for a second while I made the switch. Overall the show was another hit for us! Take a listen to it below!

chocolate fountain! @ Pajama Party

Yeah, it was hard to compete with this act. We had singers and musicans on stage, and a house DJ. Nothing could overshadow that incredible chocolate fountain!

Can you believe all I had from that fountain was 2 chocolate covered strawberries and a few dipped choclate chip cookies! With all my running around backstage, I never got to get my grub on properly!

Oh yeah, you gotta love that logo in the back of the shot....working it!

Really Really Good: Blogged out-Blogcritics rocks the socks off BWE in Vegas!

Blog World New Media Expo wound up last week, leaving hundreds in attendance happy and blogged out! The event was filled with exhibition booths, great panel speakers and an opening party filled with web celebs and up and coming stars! While the number of general people off the streets was relatively small, that made it easier for those who made the trek to Vegas to actually meet the vendors, speakers and media! Soon as I walked into the expo with JhaVoice and the band, (shouts to Alex, Jorge, and Ozmo!) I was greeted by Patti from BlogWorld. She guided us through the gates and we were soon mingling with some of the best bloggers alive!

We stood up front for second, listening to the live broadcast from Townhall.com, and Pajama’s Media’s booth both vying for attention! Later I was interviewed by Carmen of SiTV.com and LuvCarmen.com The hot and steamy questions that she asked me, got a little hot under the coller for a second but was a fun little bit thanks to Talitha and the guys behind the lens at Luv Carmen.com. Make sure you check her blog at Sitv.com too!

I spent the majority of Thursday evening, wearing the manager hat, as JhaVoice, our amazing recording act here at the Kayaro compound prepared for the performance at the opening party, held in the Hard Rock Casino. As we made our quick rounds through the expo and jetted back and forth from the hotels and The Hard Rock, I tried to stop and smell the digital roses that were the numerous contacts in the blogsphere! People from all corners of the internet were in the house that night, from movers and shakers like Matt Mullenweg and the guys behind Wordpress.com, Leo Laporte, Will Leitch and a host of others.

Once we got the show on the road, all the tension and jitters faded and we were able to relax and party with everyone in our hidden dressing room. If you were in the house that night, I must apologize for the sound crew at The Hard Rock, as they decided to turn down the main volume, half way through the performance that night, causing all in attendance to jerk their heads toward the BOH system in unison, with puzzled looks on their face like “What happened to the sound?” Seems like JhaVoice was overpowering the social mixer and people couldn’t hear themselves smooze. Once the minor setback was overcome, JhaVoice and the crew got back into the groove with an impromptu live session, as Deana Tha Poet, Sincere and Lioness rocked the freestyle spoken word set to the live guitar work. The night was topped with tremendous response, despite the sound setbacks!

The next day was just as exciting, I got to take a slower paced walk thru the booths and hang out with some of my BlogCritics & B5 friends for a bit. It was fun finally putting faces to the names of some of our editors here at the sinister cabal of superior writers, and when we all put together the next big event, you all really should try and make it out! If anything, I wish I had more time to hang with everyone as it was really cool to take a look at our little family, all nestled up together, watching some of the side companies blatantly try to take some of our shine! I mean was it me, or did everyone in attendance step up Blogcritics booth at least twice?? We were the cool kids on the block, hands down, sans poker table and stand up-comedians.

While Phil took a quick run to In & Out for burgers, I chatted with Dave Nalle a bit about one of the great loves of anyone southern, barbecue. He has a new book out that already has me getting ready to plan a trip to Austin, to sample the Texan BBQ grills! The whole conversation reminded me just how long it’s been since I’ve been to Memphis, I may have to head down there to do some research! Eric and I spoke briefly about plans to expand our horizons at BlogCritics, with podacst and video streams all being considered. The future looked so bright at the BC booth, that we all really should have had our shades! From there we headed to the panel, as briefly spoke at a pop culture panel, put on by Eric. We actually had a handful of people in our room, as I winged it and tried to sound like I had a clue. The conversation was fun though, and one of the highlights of the expo for me personally.

I had a chance to set up a radio interview on BlogTalkRadio.com, with JhaVoice and I sitting in with Sean for a second. The guys at BTR were very welcoming and we look forward to speaking with them soon! Thanks to Lisa for kicking it with us and the kind words, see you in San Fran soon! Be on the lookout for more from us at Blog Talk Radio.

The thing about going to an event like this one is that you want to try and meet everyone. The closer you get to meeting that goal, the more your head begins to spin! We met tons of great people at BlogWorld and hope to stay in touch with you all. After listening to the keynote address for a bit and managing to meet Lynne d. Johnson of Fast Company for about a second, I headed back to the hotel for some overdue lunch. Our plans to catch up to the rest of the BC crew fell apart due as the dinner started to weight in and slow our motivation. The 3 AM last minute recording session booked later that night also took some of the wind out of my sails as I called it a wrap on BWE.

I am compiling a list of all the assorted BC/BWE links of the event, to share with you. Feel free to share your links & pics from BlogWorld here! Thanks again to Rick, Patti and everyone at the expo for a great time!

See ya at the next one! Check below for a few pics from the expo!

Blog World Expo: Pajama Media Party

Not sure who took this one, I think it was DJ Steve Boyett's friend, but I love it becasue you can see JhaVoice on the IMAGE screen in the back while bloggers smooze and booze the night away.

Laron Cue @ Pajama Party

yet another great shot from Anna's angle!

Introducing Laron Cue @ Pajama Party

Just found these photos from The Pajama party in Vegas! The shot looks like a fun pose but at this exact moment, DJ Steve Boyett was yelling at the crowd like a madman, telling them to get into the party and make some cot-damn noise!
It's funny now, but it was not so much fun at that exact moment in time. Thanks to Anna for the great shot!

ROCKERS--25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

ROCKERS is a Reggae triumph. By all critical standards ROCKERS is one of the greatest Reggae films ever. Starring Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace and Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall, it’s a Robin Hood style story of oppressed Jamaican musicians getting even with the "mafia types" in the business.

But it is the all-star musical performances, appearances, and soundtrack that sets ROCKERS apart, featuring Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Third World, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Kiddus I, Junior Murvin, Inner Circle, the Heptones, & Abyssinians.

ROCKERS includes acting roles and appearances by Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Burning Spear, Kiddus I, Robbie Shakespeare, Leroy Smart, Big Youth, & Dillinger. Join us as we celebrate the life of one of the classic reggae films, “Rockers”.

Live musical performances after the screening:

Really Really Good: Star Gazing

Really Really Good: Star Gazing

Peace and hairgrease, my good online people! Prepare to take another fantastic voyage on the RRG starship, hitting nebulas and black holes from here to the Pleiades and back! Moving at mach speed through cyber space, I have gathered yet another collection of earthen video delights, news from the blue sphere and more mojo from the dojo. Yeah, we know YouTube has won the popularity contest between online video site, there are still tons out there that are worth your cubicle time. Nothing but the best in online sights and sounds, guerilla multimedia tactics, and funky fresh flicks of chicks, packed into one super duper fly column.

As Captain Sisco would say, “BATTLE STATIONS!”

UPDATE: Bell released from jail!
taken from CNN.com
Mychal Bell, a black teenager accused of beating a white classmate and who was the last of the "Jena 6" behind bars, was released from custody Thursday after a juvenile court judge set his bail at $45,000.

The Jena 6 in depth page is worth a look as well!

Judge denies bail for 'Jena 6' teen

FOX News "Balances" Jena 6 With Black Racism
Wow, I am really starting to hate this guy Sean Hannity. When talking to Rev. Al Sharpton regarding race, what else, he showed his balanced reporting skills by comparing the words of Isaiah Thomas to the actions of the Jena 6. The best part is at the very end of the clip, when he acts like he can’t hear Sharpton and ignores the real question at hand.

The Many Faces Of Britney

CelebTV.com is stocked with tons of clips of celebrities, news makers and various attention hogs from the latest goon rolling with OJ, to the new runner up for the Anna Nicole Smith award, Britney Spears. The exclusive video featuring the interview with Spears’ “hit and run” victim is here, as is this interesting little photo stream of Brit, with pictures of her from the start of her innocent looking career, to today’s commando klutz we all know and love! As Fergie would say, check it out!

Video Picks of The Week

“Cut Off Time” –Omarion featuring Kat De Luna
Clever re-working of the INXS hit “I Need You Tonight”, with Omarion and Kat holding down the vocals and stepping up on the floor something major!

I know this might sound funny coming from your favorite B-Boy Blogger, but when I’m not listening to the latest gangsta rap cut from MC Foul Mouth, I am blasting this song in my ride! Hey, I’m originally from Tennessee, so deal with it.

Soggy Bottom Boys “Man Of Constant Sorrow” –(not the original but not bad either)

Weekend Recap: Respect My Fresh!

What a week we just had here at the Kayaro/Canhead camp!

"Fresh: A Day In The Life" was amazing, big shouts to everybody that came through and supported the movement, and rocked the backyard. Percee P said it reminded him of how they used to do it waay back in the day, in the boogie down Bronx. Just set up some chairs, throw some music on the turntables, plug the mics in and get busy. The free food helped attract the party people a bit too, I think!

Thanks to Matt and everybody at 33Third, Big Smoq, Rezin, Main Vybe, Tommy Black, DJ Shiro, and everyone there! We are working on the visuals and hope to get them up this week so stay tuned!

Happy earth day shouts to JhaVoice! The birthday cake was a nice touch to the "Fresh" show, and we have been celebrating the day ever since! We wish many happy more to our songbird, JhaVoice!

Shaolin Temple

The Tang emperor is betrayed by one of his generals, who installs himself as emperor in the East Capital. The son of one of his slave workers escapes to the Shaolin Temple, learns kung fu, and sets out to kill the traitor, who killed his father. The monks have to help him, and in the process, they save the true emperor, who rewards them greatly. Based on a true story from Shaolin folklore, but highly fictionalized.
