OK, so I spend way to much time on this blog and not on "real work". I can't help it, every time I start working on essays or Economics assignments (I'm working on it Mr. Jarvis I swear!) there is something onlint that i have to post.
Today I really was working on my American Cinema essay (my last one!). My subject is Hollywood and the issue of race. While writing on the old fashioned Hollywood, racially insensitive "classics" like "Birth of A Nation" and how far Hollywood has come, I came across this basin of ice cold water in the face. Renee Graham makes a good point when she states “It's hard to fathom Smith could ever be deemed too black.” Is it really like Kanye (Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coupe)West said? Damn.
Note to Hollywood: I watch White actors paired up with White Actresses and never had a problem with it….put Jada next to Will Smith in a romantic comedy free of stereotypes and watch America eat it up, you a$$holes! Romantic comedy, not drama, not comedy, not action flick, but ROMANTIC COMEDY! Think Cuba and Vivica in a Sleepless in Seattle remake. It wouldn’t hurt you to cast J. Lo next to Enrique or Marc for that matter either…hell it couldn’t do worse than Gigli and you will win points for being ‘forward thinking” and modern.)
Since I started this blog, I get emails forwarded to me from publicity departments of all the players in the music industry. (Much Props to E.O. and Blog Critics.org) So much in fact, that I am constantly finding emails about some must see event, a day late and a dollar short..Po Pimpin' style. (speaking of Po' Pimpin'...I have Do or Die coming to Canhead soon, stay tuned)
I recently got one from Astralwerks announcing their line up of releases and tour dates. Here are some of the plans, I will be emailing Alison for more info. They are doing some big things this year, and hopefully I'll be there giving you the blow by blow details as they happen. Ben Watt of Everything But The Girl, Miss Kitten, and VHS or Beta are all on deck with the hotness, ready to release projects in the next month.
Here's a little from the email:
"Astralwerks is thrilled to announce The Chemical Brothers triumphant return to the US for their first live dates in 3 years! Their single "Galvanize" featuring vocals from Q-Tip is heating up the radio airwaves across the country. Their critically acclaimed new album, Push The Button, is out now. (Note to self: get personal copy of "Push The Button" for review asap) " It looks like they are still setting dates for the tour but they have these three dates listed. If your nearby, you should check them out.
Sidenote to The Chemical Brothers---When you guys set a NYC date, Q-Tipwill perform with you, right?!?!?
4/27 Seattle, WA The Premier 4/29 San Francisco, CA Henry J. Kaiser Arena (w/ New Order) 4/30 Indio, CA Coachella
More dates to be announced soon! I'm all over this one like the dew covers Dixie so check back often. Check out the Chemical Brothers website and video to "Galvanize"too!
Canhead.com's Favorite Chemical Brothers/Q-Tip song list
1. "Vivrant Thang"-Q-Tip While the video may have offended some with it's unrelenting line up of scantly clad models, it is a beautifully shot video (with or without the ladies...ahh who am I kiddin' without the ladies it is like Kool-Aid without sugar..weak!) Possibly Q-Tip's last real club banger until "Galvanize".
2. "Exit Planet Dust LP"-Chemical Brothers This album reminds me of New Jersey, or should I say my life in New Jersey. When I was just getting into house, techno, dance, whatever you wanna call that shit with all the noise, bleeps and frequency sweeps. Back then, all the talk was how this new form of music was going to change the world. 10 years later, they are still saying that. Whatever, this album is the bomb!
3."Get Your Self High"-Chemical Brothers Come on..this was the fucking shit! Sorry for the curses, but their is no other way to describe this song. It's like the Guinness guys say on the commericals, "BRILLANT!" "Don't rely on us to get you high!" If I had a dollar for everytime I told someone that. No but seriously, this song rocks, and the video is on some Wu-Tang shit for real.
4. "Where Do I Begin" -Chemical Brothers This was my song for a long time! The first time I heard it was on a tape a friend of mine made for me. I had just got home from another late Saturday night on the town. As i sat on the couch, watching the sun rise, I decided to pop the tape in, roll one up and chill. This song came on, lullabied me to sleep, and has been on my all time favorite list ever since. (That would make the day I first heard "Where Do I Begin" a SUNDAY MORNING! HA!)
I complain about their not being a lot to do up here in Albany. I am starting to take that back. There are tons of things jumping off up here, you just have to look a little harder for them sometimes. Case in point, check out some of the events planned for this weekend.
Northern Lights has a hot line up this weekend for the Albany heads...from rock to hip-hop, Clifton Park is going to be the spot this weekend. This Saturday night they have Hot97 FM's very own DJ Fat Man Scoopdoing it up. Then on Sunday night, Breaking Benjamin, Theory of a Deadman and the Exiesenter the building. On Tuesday night, Rusted Rootperforms for their upstate fans. Meanwhile, down at my bar Lark Tavern, (it may not be my bar anymore since I haven't been in the joint to see Ms. Tess for many moons now)518 representative Shyste (also check this link)and Awar had their double CD release party on Friday night. Maybe I'll make it to "Sundaze" with DJ Ryan Kick; Sev Statik and DJ Bake.
And if that wasn't enough, all hail he king! That's right, I wish my parent were in town so I could take them to see the man, Mr. B.B. Kingat the Palace TheatreMonday night. Much more is on the way, Green Dayand Sarah McLachlanboth are coming to The Pepsi and Papa Roachand Vanessa Carltonwill appear at Northern Lights toward the end of the month. (Got to the show and tell her thanks for that "Time Warner" cable commercial!) So now my problem is getting the time off for some of these events, this night weekend work situation of mine is being re-evaluated as we speak.
Cee-Lo Green-My Kind Of People This one has made it to my all time favorite hip-hop songs list. I think if you give it a chance, it will land on your all time favorties list too...

In the wake of "Fahrenheit 9-11" there has been an increase in the number of documentaries released by the Hollywood machine. With all that is going on in our world these days, it's no wonder that documentaries of politics or even the hamburger industry competes with the latest super hero spin offs and sequels. Many of them have moved us to action, educated us on matters we may have known about but were never exposed to, and enlightened us on the human factors behind every debate. One such film opens tomorrow and is sure to have people talking.
"Gunner Palace" was made by Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein. They follow a field artillery unit in Baghdad that was stationed at one of Uday Hussein's abandoned palaces, during the height of the Iraq conflict. It should be at the very least, an interesting look into reality of being in combat in Iraq. This film is sure to stoke the fires of debate between the left and the right here at home. Some are already crying foul because of the strictly American viewpoint. Regardless, it is a viewpoint that we have not seen or heard as of yet. "Gunner Palace" looks to be a must-see film of the year, as "Fahrenheit" was last year. (Ed. Note. So last year I may add)
For trailers of the film, check the following links.
Brace for impact party people, hip-hop is about to catch some more heat! It’s not even spring yet. All of the major hip-hop sites are on this. Check the links out, as this story is spreading all over the damn place. Newsday, CourtTV.com, Billboard, Hip Hop DX, HipHopMusic.com ,All Hip-Hop.com, and Pro Hip Hop.com, are a just a few who are on it.
Speaking of shooting in front of Hot 97, Lil Kim’s trial moves forward today, as opening statments are expected to begin. Stay tuned for more info.

A few post back, I told you about an up and coming producer Disco D. He produced, among other things, the crazy hot track "The Ski Mask Way" by New York's real Drama King, 50 Cent. With it's player's ball type loop chopped up in the background, and 50 spitting some of his tightest crime rhymes yet, going back to his "How To Rob" days with a flow that "ruined Jeffrey's career". It's sure to be, in the words of Mimi Valdes, "a club banger!" This should be expected from Disco D, as he is far from a rookie in this game.
Disco D has been putting in work for a minute now. He was one of the main architects of Ghetto Tech, a sound that me and my Ghetto Kidz crew were feeling and trying to put our own spin on (our Ghetto Metal ep scared the shit outta every A&R in New York). He has several releases under his belt, including a string of independent techno singles, his mix cd "A Night At The Booty Bar" released on Tommy Boy Records, and several tracks on the Nina Sky album. Disco D has continued to keep the faith and like all of the faithful, he has been rewarded. On top of all that, D is a real cool dude. So cool that he agreed to chop it up with your boy Q! (Thanks to Michelle for hooking it up!) I emailed him a few questions and he responded in kind. Check it out.
Canhead: What's up D? You' re making some big moves these days. Are you officially making the move from ghetto tech to hip-hop?
Disco D: Part of the problem in music in general is people genre-fy too much. To me Ghettotech was always about drawing from whatever and not giving a fuck. That's why I can produce a 137 bpm record for sara stokes that has a commodores sample and can mix with 2 Live Crew or stuff in that range, or co-produce a song like "Turnin' Me On" for Nina Sky or the upcoming Gunclap riddim I did with Max Glazer of Federation Sound which can feature both The Clipse and Vybz Kartel on the same song. I write music with feeling and emotion in mind, not with genres. We only had to put the name Ghettotech behind what I was doing before for marketing purposes at the time.
Canhead: Some are already saying that "Ski Mask Way" is the hottest track on the new 50 Cent album. How does it feel to have one of the hottest joints on one of the hottest music stars album?
Disco D: It's a blessing, but I really wrote that instrumental about/for my girlfriend (now fiancee) when we were dealing with distance and language issues last October. Due to what 50 and Nina Sky and everything else has provided for me I no longer have to be apart from her ever so I'm cool with that. I also no longer have to take the proverbial dick from the industry anymore, and I can use this influence to help inspire positive change.
Canhead: OK, many may not know of your past, but I do. Tell the people a little bit about your past.
Disco D: Ha, well that's a looong story. I've been DJing since 16, and I used to put out 'underground' uptempo vinyl only releases that never sold more than 1,500 copies - the first one I put out when I was in high school. I started and deaded two labels myself when I was in college.
My name recognition as a DJ was such that I could make a decent living at it and travel a lot. I had my share of shitty offers, which I took when I was young and green but then after getting screwed over early I decided I would go to business school and I figured out how to make the right moves on my own.
Canhead: Do you have any "beef" over Ghetto Tech? I know people were hating on it a little back in the day, like it wasn't the real techno. How did you deal with that?
Disco D: The more people talk about you the more attention you are getting. As long as I stay right by me I'm cool. I learned to read between the lines and get the big picture on all that talk.
Canhead: Let's talk about booty...I mean The Booty Bar. Is it still at Filter 14?
Disco D: The owner actualy sold that spot. I gave the trademark to DJ Salinger. He can use it more than me. If there is something with it he wants me to put my name and time behind and I feel like its the right thing I'll roll with it and help him all day.
Canhead: Ok..on a serious note. With all the attention on sexism in music these days, many may point to you and your style of music (booty music, ghetto tech, etc.) as part of the problem. What do you have to say to those who say your music is just misogynistic?
Disco D: I'm an engaged man and a spiritual man. I don't write that many lyrics, only shape sound. If you actually listen to records with my name on it, that I have writing credits on, the only real mysogynistic one was the first EP 'D-Down' which had a lyric like 'dick that bitch down' that was chopped in a clever way. I recorded that before I even lost my virginity. I didn't know any better.
Canhead: What's next? Any appearances, or dj gigs planned?
Disco D: I am not touring right now. It doesn't make sense this second, later I'll do a tour with all of Federation Sound and it will encompass the entire scope of what they/I represent. In terms of production, here's what's on the new promo flyer:
"Out 2005:
50 Cent's 'Ski Mask Way
'Nina Sky's 'Turnin' Me On' (w/ Cipha Sounds & Black Chiney)
Federation Sound presents the Gunclap Riddim (produced by Disco D and Max Glazer) featuring songs by Mr. Vegas, Lexxus, Mad Cobra, The Clipse, Ward 21, Jigsy King, Kardinal Offishal and friends
Sara Stokes album featuring the Disco D produced 'Can I Get That,' 'Just Shut Up And Dance,' 'Keep The Change,' 'Shakedown,' 'Make The First Move,' and 'I Remember'
Lumidee, Tiearra, Kato, Bee & More"
This is everything the public knows about. I have holds from several platinum and multiplatinum artists as well as probably the biggest ad I have ever been involved in going on right now. My new website just launched as well - anyone needing advice on music business, production, DJing or whatever go visit the forum at my website http://www.discod.com.
The first episode of my self filmed documentary DVD series DiscoDVD will be available for sale on the web in the next 2 weeks. The first episode features me recording with Sara, Kato, meetings with Lumidee and G-Unit, as well as an inside look at the 50 Cent MTV mansion party and concert. It's a pretty hilarious look at one week of my life, because all that filming really took place like a week ago. Hard to believe.
Canhead: Cool, thanks for your time and getting back with me D!
Disco D: No, thank you!
Canhead: Ps--people slept on the Nina Sky shit. "Runaway" needs to be a single, if it isn't already.
Disco D: ha! thanks! that beat I had done b4 I even met them.
Canhead: I need a signed copy of the (A Night At The Booty Bar) CD. Can you make that happen? I collect autographs, I have that XLR8R "Ghetto Tech" issue somewhere around here too.
Disco D: I don't know if I have more cds but I have plenty of that XLR8R in question. I can for sure do that.
~~end of interview.~~
You heard him right? I got a signed XLR8R coming to me! Don't hate! Make sure your on the lookout for more from Disco D in the near future. I have a feeling we will be hearing alot from this guy. I think I'll try to talk him into a GhettoTech revival, without as much "Ass and Titties" this time around..well maybe just a little bit. D may be in a relationship but Q is not. I may have to take his spot at the Booty Bar, ya know, keep the chair warm for him.
Here are some links for you to check out. I re-posted the MP3 link to "Ski Mask Way" for you too. Make sure you check out the 50 Cent album party on MTV next week too.
What it do, its El Q The Internet Champ! My blog light up light a lamp cuz I'm back with the camp!
Ahhh...it's God's day of rest (can someone tell that to my boss who will not change my schedule so I can rest on the Sabbath) and I'm about to catch a few winks. The night shift thing is really getting on my nerves. I may have to do something drastic to remedy this situation.
On to more important matters. A lot of things are jumping off this week for me, some I will share with you soon. I got a hot exclusive coming Monday, and some more mix sets are on the way. For real, I was out of commission a few weeks ago, but it's on like Donkey Kong right about now, check back often as I'm not only posting daily to keep up, next week might see hourly post. In the words of MF Doom,....YIKES! Anyway, with no more delay, just check out the new style I display.
~Have you heard of these cats from Brooklyn (stand up) DJ Ayres & Cosmo Baker? They are part of the DJ collective know as The Rub. Son, they are on point! I have not been to their parties, but if their remixes are any indication, I will be begging the promoters to get on the list and a couple of drink tickets next Saturday night. Yo for real, these remixes are of the chain!
Their latest release is called "The Rub Remixes Vol. 1 EP" and its full of mash ups that will separate the real club djs from the fashion club djs (like real dreads and beauty salon fashion dreads, ya bumba ras!) What I mean by that is if you can play this EP at the club you spin at and people go ape shit, then you are a real dj in a real hip-hop party. If not......well wedding djs make money too, so get that loot and when your done working, go to The Rub party.
Make sure you visit them by clicking on the picture above. They have free MP3s of some of the tracks off the EP. Being the man I am, I had to jack those links for my Canheads. Here ya go kids! But seriously, check these guys out! They have a few hot mash ups and blends, some seem to be submitted by other DJs (yeah, I am sending mines soon as I post this, don't sleep on El Q The Gr8!) Check out the Crime Mob vs Billy Joel mash up, Nas & Red Hot Chilli Peppers "Last Real Nigga" (DAMN!), and that Paul Wall Diplo remix. (Hey Diplo, screw and chop that thang up and Texas is yours son!) unbelievable stuff here ya'll!
G-Unit vs Wu-Tang - Stunt 101 (Cosmo Baker Remix) Say Word!?! Maybe RZA & G-Unit should work together! Works like a mug here! Nas vs Diamond D - Bridging the Gap (Eleven Remix) Pretty funky, Nas on "Young Gifted and Black" Inst. DAMN! Joe Buddens "Pump It Up "-crooked remix This sh!t is f*ck1n' amazing.. Joe Budden and Jimi Hendrix?!? WOW!)
Jay-Z & Beyoncee "Bonnie and Clyde '03" - crooked remix- Again, DAMN! DJ Crooked killed it!----
I won't even start to talk about my feeling about the King of Pop. I am very interested in the case as is everyone else in the world. MJ has issues, no doubt, but I am not gonna throw him under the bus. I'll just sit here and watch the drama unfold and listen to everyone else yell their opinions at each other.
What I will do is post this track I have laying around. My WinAmp was shuffling through the thousands of songs I have, and came across this oldie but goodie. In the spirit of MJ watching, I thought I really should post this one.
~MJ speaks on the team-up with Bigge and hip-hop love. Unbreakable VIBE Magazine Interview - March 2002
VIBE: Are you feeling hip hop? MJ: I like a lot of it, a lot of it. I like the music. I don't like the dancing that much. It looks like they're doing aerobics. VIBE: How did you decide to feature Biggie Smalls on "Unbreakable", off Invincible? MJ: It wasn't my idea, actually. It was Rodney Jerkins's, one of the writer/producers working on the album. It was my idea to put a rap part on the song, and he said, "I know just the perfect on - Biggie." He put it in, and it worked perfectly. VIBE: Why did you choose Jay-Z for the remix of the first single, "You Rock My World"? MJ: He's hip, the new thing, and he's with the kids today. They like his work. He's tapped into the nerve of popular culture. It just made good sense. VIBE: What was it like for you to appear at New York's Hot 97 Summer Jam concert as Jay-Z's guest? MJ: I just showed up and gave him a hug. There was a tumultuous explosion of applause and stomping, a lovely, lovely welcome, and I was happy about that. It was a great feeling - the love, the love.
~PS. The song title is ripe for comments and jokes by the way. Feel free to post your comments or just vent. I think I'll pop my copy of "The Wiz" in the VCR and reminisce of the gloved one's better days.

MP3/P2P : Ok, I have a confession to make. I still download MP3s. Althought I don't download the usual stuff and I do limit my downloads to a respectable amount, I am still jacking for beats like Ice Cube in a skullie coving the jheri curls. Right now I have "Elektra","Polar Express", "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" and a few others in my download folder. I know I'm wrong for downloading but the reality is I already saw "Harold & Kumar", and I got "Polar Express" for junior, who also saw it at the theaters. So it pisses me off that if I download a movie that I have already paid to watch, the Internet Police might come for me.
While stewing over this, I came across an article written by Richard Menta on the subject. He raises some interesting points, like the relativly small number of people who download movies compared to the current "sue the customer" mentality that is emerging in Hollywood and corporate America in general.
Yo, don't sleep on this kid Immortal Technique. Dude is too real for radio. The way he spits, I'm sure the hip-hop task force is already following him, but he is NOT one of the usual suspects. Real hip-hop with something to say! Peep game at Viper Room.com.(click the pic above)
Please welcome the newest Canhead on the block, Ms. Sonja Valentine! She is a poetess extreme who drops knowledge at her spot "Inner Revolution, Shake It Up Baby", and is a huge hip-hop fan so you know shes aiiight with me! I'm trying to get her to post on Canhead so show her some love and check her site out for some words. (She's a little shy so make her feel at home!)

It has been just over a month since over 5,000 of you lined the streets of Washington, DC and, through one unified action, delivered a message to Bush, the country, and the world. Over 50 million people heard about Turn Your Back on Bush; on TV, in newspapers, on the radio, and online, and our work together continues to make waves.
Last week a group attending President Bushs Social Security forum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire got national coverage when they took of their coats to reveal Turn Your Back on Bush t-shirts at the ticketed event. And in Europe many people have adopted this tactic, turning their backs on Bush during his European tour.
Check out our home page for a link to the NPR story on Turn Your Back on Bush in New Hampshire, the Onion's front-page article about our action and to see Saturday Night Live's coverage of Turn Your Back on Bush.
For many of you, this was your first time participating in a political action. For others, it was another step on a long road of activism, organizing, and working for social change. It was the role of the Turn Your Back on Bush team to facilitate this action, to give you the tools and resources you needed to make it a success. We believe we were successful to that end, and from the countless phone calls and emails we have gotten since the Inauguration, we are confident that it was a success for you too.And there is more to do!
Turn Your Back on Bush is part of a growing movement of small groups taking on the Bush Administration's policies, and well be using this list to pass on information about what were doing as well as actions and ideas that other groups are working on. We were just two people when we started and if we learned anything from this experience its that we all have the power to make change. We're reposting some of the resources we found most helpful in building this action on our website - non-violence training manuals and information on creating successful non-violent actions.
We encourage you to use them and pass them on - you can find them (the home page) Well be continuing to send out updates through this email list, and well keep on adding media links and other important links to the website, and if youve got news youd like to share with us, please send it to info@turnyourbackonbush.org.
Thanks, The Turn Your Back on Bush Team
www.TurnYourBackonBush.org
P.S. We've developed a presentation about Turn Your Back on Bush which we've shown at several conferences in the last few weeks. It tells the story of how this action came about and we'd like to use it to inspire more people to use creative action to resist the Bush administration's polices. If you're interested in having one of us bring this presentation to your group, please let us know!

The most annoying thing about being online sometimes is just being online. You never know if your going to be able to post your latest thoughts or not. Even if you pay for server space or hosting, every once in a while, your website will just disappear. Most of the time, you will be able to save most of your information or your host provider will get it together and bring your site back to life, Soul II Soul style.
So a few days back, I was online, preparing a post for Valentine's Day. I was almost done, just about to do a final spell check when BLAM! Canhead froze up. I couldn't get back into my Blogging Dashboard. I sent emails to Blogger, checked back daily, and still nothing. It's weird..the site was still up and almost everything worked, but I couldn't add new post or correct any problems or typos.
So I thought I was forced to start over again, for the 3rd time. I started to make a new blog spot, dreading losing all my visitors and such. Then I checked it today and it worked. I'm back.
I am already outgrowing the blog space, as I want a media page, shopping cart and e-store, as well as blog and events calendar. Sooner or later I will have to upgrade to a paid host. But I'm back now, so let's get back to business. I will be back on point in a minute..ps any blogger.com bloggers have any problems lately? Let me know if so.....
Get the connection? Dark Phoenix..my blog died and is back..meaner and funkier than ever. ONE YOURSELF!
Texas got it on lock right now. I was slow to catching on to the chopped and screwed sh!t, but I started banging it a few years ago. It was only a matter of time until Houston started to blow.
